
Lockdown leads to a surge in library memberships

Readers haven't had the opportunity to return books due to Wales lockdown
Book borrowing is rivalling home baking and TV binge-watching for lockdown entertainment.
New figures show that over since the start of the coronavirus pandemic digital memberships in libraries across Wales have increased.

Although libraries have not reopened, appointment systems have been set up across Wales enabling members to collect and return books at local drop off points.
The service allows readers to order a specific title or author and library staff are happy to select items for readers.
Pembrokeshire library have had a shortage of books on their shelves as members have been unable to return books.
Their order and collect service was launched in libraries on the 2nd July and more than 600 orders have been placed for 2,100 items.
1,980 books have been returned to Pembrokeshire libraries since they started the click and collect system, but more than 23,000 are still on loan.
Anita Thomas, Pembrokeshire library manager, said: “Customer feedback indicates that those using the order and collect service are extremely grateful that we are offering access to physical books
“Whether this is reading for pleasure, information or pure escapism, books can provide reassurance, comfort and empathy, which I think is needed at a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty.”
The Welsh Government provided £250,000 towards digital library resources which enabled libraries to provide additional resources during lockdown.
Many libraries have seen an increase in the number of customers who are using e-books, e-magazines and e-comics.
Bridgend County Borough Council has had an 823% increase in online memberships compared to the same period in 2019.

A representative from Gwynedd Council said: “The digital offer has seen a surge in membership and interest, and has been extremely popular."
Book fanatic Louise Williams , 21, from Llanelli who runs her own virtual book club on her Instagram page and has been using Gorseinon library in Swansea throughout lockdown, said :“It’s been amazing having the library throughout these challenging times. Reading really helps improve my mental health so having these resources available is really important for everyone."
