Covid: Wales’ schools and colleges reopen after months of lockdown.

Schools and colleges in Wales have reopened after months of lockdown. 

 

Education Minister, Kirsty Williams unveiled her plans in a recent press conference. The reopening include changes that will be made to keep children, parents and teachers safe. 

 

“Pupils will be grouped together in contact groups of around 30 people. Face coverings will be mandatory in communal areas and corridors, “Ms Williams said. 

 

Students at Cardiff and Vale College are adapting to the ‘new normal’ since returning to campus in September. There has been a shift in teaching, one student said. Classes have been split between online learning and half on campus. 

 

English student, Molly-Ellis-Gale found the change in learning ‘difficult’ as well as the new way teachers 

 

“It’s taken a while to adjust to the new style of teaching,” Molly said. “Teachers are unable to walk around classes or give out handouts.”

The college has put new rules in place to ensure student and staff safety. There are a limited number of classrooms, hand sanitisers around the building, masks are to be worn around the corridors and keep a social distance at all times. 

 

Charlie Andrews, apprentice student said: “I feel comfortable coming to college because of the one-way system, social distancing, and wearing masks.” 

 

After months of lockdown, hair and beauty student, Maymoonah Khan felt it was important to be back on campus and have some normality back. 

 

Maymoonah Khan said: “I believe it is important to come into college during these times. 

 

“Having social aspects of your life back is really important - unless it affects your health or you have anxiety around coming to school.”
